The Viphya Plantations Division is mandated to manage timber plantations and expand the plantation area. Viphya Plantations Division is administered by seven stations: Luwawa, Kalungulu, Chikangawa, Champhoyo, Nthungwa, Mazamba and Lusangazi. The Viphya Plantation areas is 53,501 hectares of which 38,500 hectares are managed under concession agreements by RAIPLY Malawi Limited, AKL Timbers, Total Landcare (TLC) and Timber Millers Union.
Area distribution by concessionaire is as follows: 20,000 hectares for RAIPLY covering Champhoyo, Chikangawa, and part of Kalungulu, Nthungwa and Mazamba; 6,000 hectares for AKL covering part of Luwawa; 2,500 hectares for TLC covering part of Luwawa; and 10,000 hectares for Timber Millers Union covering Mazamba and part of Nthungwa.
The remaining15,001 hectares are managed by government and other individual operators such as Leopard Matches and Alliance One in five administrative stations: Lusangazi, Mazamba, Nthungwa, Kalungulu and Luwawa.
