Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM)

The Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM) is the research branch of the Department of Forestry. The institute was established as a Silvicultural Research Station in Dedza in 1957 under the then, Agricultural Research Council of Central Africa. FRIM's mandate was initially to conduct basic research on the management of forest plantations to support afforestation programs of the government.

Malawi College of Forestry and Wildlife (MCFW)

Malawi College of Forestry and Wildlife (MCFW) is an academic institution accredited to Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). MCFW is the main training service provider for vocational forestry and wildlife training in Malawi. As stipulated in the National Forestry Program for Malawi, MCFW is responsible for training front-line staff and managers for the natural resource management sector focusing mainly on forestry and wildlife.

Viphya Plantations

The department is mandated to manage timber plantations and expand the plantation area. Therefore, the Viphya Plantations Division is administered by seven stations namely: Luwawa, Kalungulu, Chikangawa, Champhoyo, Nthungwa, Mazamba and Lusangazi. The plantation has an area of 53,501 hectares of which 38,500 hectares are managed under concession agreements by RAIPLY Malawi Limited, AKL Timbers, Total Landcare and Timber Millers Union.

Area distribution by concessionaire is as follows: 20,000 hectares for RAIPLY covering Champhoyo, Chikangawa, and part of Kalungulu, Nthungwa and Mazamba; 6,000 hectares for AKL covering part of Luwawa; 2,500 hectares for TLC covering part of Luwawa; and 10,000 hectares for Timber Millers Union covering Mazamba and part of Nthungwa.

The department has a four Forest Zones: Northern Zone, Central Zone, Southern Zone and Eastern Zone. The district offices in these zones are listed below.
