Climate displacement programme launched in eight districts

RE2CLID will help communities prevent and recover from climate-induced displacement — including through community-based natural resource management.

The Regional Responses to Climate-Induced Displacement Programme (RE2CLID) was launched in Malawi on 15 June 2026, after its work plan was endorsed on 10 June. Funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Organization for Migration with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, it runs in Chikwawa, Nsanje, Mangochi, Blantyre District, Blantyre City, Mulanje, Phalombe and Dowa.

Of the programme’s EUR 15.5 million for Malawi, EUR 3.8 million goes to natural resource management — the part closest to the Department of Forestry’s work: village natural resources management committees, land-use plans that account for environmental and displacement risk, nature-based solutions, and climate-smart livelihoods and clean energy.

After the March 2026 floods in Chikwawa and Mangochi, the programme assessed 1,354 households (6,106 people) and delivered shelter cash, unconditional cash and household items. Between October and December 2026 it will select group village heads, consult communities and gather baseline data.
