TLLP

Transforming Landscapes and Livelihoods Project

Ongoing 2021–2026

Restoring the miombo and mopane woodlands of Balaka, Ntcheu and Mangochi, and building green value chains so rural households earn more from well-managed land.

TLLP is a cross-sector approach to restoring Malawi’s miombo and mopane woodlands for sustainable forest and biodiversity management. It is a child project of the GEF Sustainable Forest Management Impact Program on Dryland Sustainable Landscapes.

Its objective is the sustainable management of the miombo and mopane productive landscapes of Balaka, Ntcheu and Mangochi, contributing to Malawi’s land degradation neutrality targets, while improving livelihoods through better land management and green value chains for key agricultural and woodland commodities.

Progress

  • Two landscapes covering 420,539 hectares are under integrated landscape management plans.

  • 7,679 hectares of forest restored, 91% of the 8,454-hectare target — with co-management in Ntcheu the main driver.

  • 5,850 hectares of agricultural land restored, 75% of the 7,845-hectare target.

  • 21 of 30 endangered miombo and mopane species reintroduced.

  • A participatory land degradation neutrality monitoring system is running, with district staff trained.

  • 179,708 people reached through tree-planting launches, sensitisation meetings and input handovers.

Green value chains

2,474 members of producer organisations are engaged (1,593 women and 881 men). Five producer organisations and companies are in incubator or accelerator programmes, and community protocols and access-and-benefit-sharing agreements are being drafted.

Desk officer: Lonny Chirambo, Senior Forestry Officer.
