At a consultation in Salima, the Department presented forest cover trends and deforestation data to guide the design of RILAP.

On 6 May 2026, government departments, development partners and technical experts met in Salima to shape the Resilient Integrated Livestock and Aquaculture Project (RILAP), a proposed Global Environment Facility project with IFAD in Karonga, Mzimba, Nkhata Bay, Lilongwe, Mangochi and Thyolo.

The Department of Forestry presented the forest resource context: national forest cover trends, forest emissions estimates, and district-level deforestation and degradation figures from Malawi’s National Forest Reference Level.

The Department has proposed two sustainable forest management objectives for the project — increasing forest cover, and improving how forest products are managed and used — with assisted natural regeneration, seedling production and tree planting, forest cover monitoring, and participatory forest management plans.
